GAAPICC Hosts 2nd Cancer Summit Print E-mail

On June 6th, 2009 the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition hosted the 2nd Annual Asian American Cancer Summit to recognize Asian American Cancer Awareness Day.

The theme for this year's summit was "Health Equity and Justice NOW."
Guest speakers included an opening plenary from Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum's Policy Director Deeana Jang who presented the key domains for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to attain optimal health and well being.

Otherspeakers include Pam Ashman of the American Cancer Society, Lloyd Asato of Asian Pacific Communities in Action, Ben de Guzman of the National Alliance for Filipino Veterans Equity and Marianne Chung and Julia Lee of the Center for Pan Asian Community Services.

The coalition also presented the inaugural ACT Award, an award for individuals who are considered to be champions and allies to the Asian American community. The ACT award was presented to Dr. George Rust of Morehouse School of Medicine and Gordon Freymann of Georgia Department of Human resources for their work in helping to plan an Asian American addendum to the Georgia Health Disparities Report.

Over 105 people attended the summit.
